Boiler breakdowns are thankfully quite infrequent but when they do occur costs can be high. Modern condensing combi boilers are complicated systems with advanced electronics and controls which require trained and certified engineers to work on them, this comes at a price. Not only is the labour expensive but parts cost can be high as well. A typical boiler breakdown can cost around £185 with some repairs costing much more than this.
It begs the question whether boiler insurance is worth having and my opinion if your boiler is more than a couple of years old then it definitely is. I’ve got a British Gas HomeCare plan, HomeCare 200 which covers not just the boiler but the whole central heating system, this costs me £17 but British Gas do offer plans starting from £9, which covers the boiler and controls. In the 3 months of having HomeCare I’ve called them out for a faulty potterton timer which was replaced within 24 hours.
Central heating maintenance and insurance plans have grown in recent years to also cover plumbing, electrics and even drains so it’s worth investigating the options available when considering such cover.
