UK Grants for Heating and Energy Efficiency

If you are planning to make any form of energy efficiency to your home financial assistance is widely available. The British Government funds various different schemes – “Warm Front” in England, “Home Energy Efficiency Scheme” in Wales, “Warm Deal” in Scotland and “Warm Homes” in Northern Ireland – for the provision of grants for domestic heating and energy efficiency improvements. Energy efficiency improvements include loft or cavity wall insulation, draught proofing and, in some cases, complete central heating systems and heating controls.

Energy efficiency grants are typically available to homeowners and the tenants of private landlords in the United Kingdom but may vary according to the type of your property and your energy efficiency needs. Other factors influencing your eligibility for an energy efficiency grant may include your age and personal circumstances, your local authority and your energy supplier. A grant may be available from your local council or your gas and/or electricity company. Maximum individual grants up to £2,700 – possibly rising to £4,000 or £5,000 for oil-fired central heating – are available although partial grants for energy efficiency improvements may also be awarded. It may be of course that the maximum grant available does not meet the full cost of the work to be completed so the homeowner or tenant is liable for the remainder.

Comprehensive advice on the grants and schemes available in the United Kingdom is available from any local Energy Efficiency Advice Centre or the Energy Saving Trust together with help in assessing your needs and all aspects of energy efficiency.
